Dado rails run around the lower to the middle of the room. They are typically positioned below the height of the picture rail.
Historically they used to protect walls from furniture and chair backs. Nowadays, they serve more as a decorative element.
Dado rails can break up large wall surfaces, adding architectural interest. They provide an opportunity to play with color and texture.
